Actress and model Hania Amir has successfully traced the Indian Instagram account behind the creation and dissemination of explicit deepfake videos featuring her likeness.
Recently, several deepfake videos that portrayed a woman resembling Hania went viral on social media. These videos, produced using AI technology, misled many of her followers into believing they were authentic.
Upon discovering the fake videos, Hania took to her Instagram story to inform her followers that the content was fabricated and not actually of her.
Following her clarification, she identified the Instagram account responsible for spreading these deepfake videos. The account, named ‘Anwrit Sindhu,’ was managed by an Indian user and had accumulated over 22,400 followers, with more than 100 posts predominantly consisting of fake videos of the actress.
Hania called on her fans to report the account, disclosing that she had been blocked by the user. Her fans acted swiftly, prompting the user to change the account name to ‘Core Sindhu’ in a bid to evade detection.
Despite these attempts to evade scrutiny, the account was eventually exposed, leading to the removal of all deepfake videos featuring Hania.
The problematic account, which had been active since September 2022, had changed its name 18 times and was traced to Chandigarh, India.
Thanks to Hania’s prompt action and her fans’ support, the harmful content was successfully removed from the platform, effectively addressing the issue.
