An Emirates Airbus A380 flying from Dubai to London Heathrow made an emergency diversion to Frankfurt Airport after a passenger suffered a medical emergency.
Emirates flight EK31 was operating from Dubai International Airport to London Heathrow on Thursday, October 1, 2026. The aircraft, an Airbus A380-800 registered as A6-EDX, departed Dubai at around 7:30 UTC.
The flight was scheduled to take approximately seven hours and 20 minutes.
Around six hours into the journey, the aircraft was cruising at an altitude of approximately 40,000 feet over European airspace when the crew activated transponder code 7700.
The code is an internationally recognised signal indicating a general emergency.
The aircraft subsequently began descending from its cruising altitude and requested permission to divert to Frankfurt Airport in Germany.
Emirates later confirmed that the diversion was caused by a medical emergency involving a passenger.
The airline said its cabin crew provided assistance during the flight. Medical support was also arranged before the aircraft reached Frankfurt.
The Airbus A380 landed safely at Frankfurt Airport, where the affected passenger disembarked and was taken for further medical attention.
Flight tracking information showed that the aircraft landed on runway 25L at approximately 4:09 p.m. local time.
Following the diversion, the Frankfurt-to-London portion of the journey was rescheduled for 6:00 p.m. Emirates said it was also arranging new itineraries for passengers affected by the disruption.
The airline apologised for the delay and reiterated that passenger and crew safety remained its highest priority.
The incident adds to several recent aviation emergencies involving flights operating through European airspace, highlighting the importance of rapid diversion procedures during serious in-flight situations.
