Billionaire Elon Musk’s business empire could face increased political and regulatory challenges after Democrats secured sweeping victories in the 2026 US midterm elections.
Musk spent nearly $500 million supporting Republican candidates and attempting to keep Texas under Republican control. However, Democrats captured both chambers of Congress, while Gina Hinojosa defeated Republican Greg Abbott to become Texas’s first Democratic governor in more than three decades.
The election results could expose Musk’s companies, including Tesla and SpaceX, to greater congressional scrutiny. Both companies experienced market pressure following the results, with SpaceX shares falling 5.5% and Tesla declining 5.1%.
Analysts believe Democratic lawmakers could tighten regulations on artificial intelligence, data centres and government contracts. They may also investigate Musk’s involvement in federal workforce reductions and restrictions affecting Ukraine’s military satellite communications.
Meanwhile, Hinojosa has called for suspending new data-centre projects until stronger protections for local communities are introduced. She has also opposed tax incentives and a potential beachfront state park sale to SpaceX.
These developments could delay Musk’s ambitious infrastructure expansion and affect future revenue targets. Consequently, investors are closely watching how the Democratic political shift could reshape the regulatory environment surrounding his business interests.
