Emergency crews battle blaze as authorities investigate cause amid ongoing nationwide heatwave
ALGIERS: At least 11 people were killed and 19 others injured after a fire broke out at an orphanage in the Mohammadia district on the eastern outskirts of Algiers early Thursday, according to Algerian state media and civil protection authorities.
Emergency services responded quickly after the blaze erupted at the facility, launching rescue operations to evacuate residents and contain the fire. Civil protection officials said 10 of the injured suffered burns of varying severity and were transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
Rescue teams also safely evacuated five people with disabilities from the building as firefighters continued working to extinguish the flames and secure the site.
Investigation underway
Authorities have not yet identified the victims or released information regarding their ages. Officials also declined to speculate on the cause of the fire, saying an investigation will determine how the blaze started.
Firefighting operations continued for several hours as emergency personnel searched the building and ensured that no additional victims remained inside. Authorities said further updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.
Government agencies are expected to assess the orphanage for structural damage once the site has been declared safe.
Heatwave raises fire concerns
The tragedy occurred as Algeria continues to experience an intense heatwave that has increased the risk of fires across the country. According to the state news agency APS, citing the General Directorate of Civil Protection, emergency services have responded to 913 fires nationwide since July 8.
High temperatures and dry weather have placed additional pressure on emergency responders, who have been tackling numerous wildfires and other fire-related incidents in recent days.
Officials have urged residents to remain vigilant during the extreme weather and to follow fire safety guidelines to reduce the risk of further incidents.
Authorities expressed condolences to the families of the victims while reaffirming their commitment to determining the cause of the fire. Investigators are expected to examine the scene, collect evidence and interview witnesses before releasing their findings. The injured continue to receive treatment as emergency officials monitor the aftermath of the deadly incident.
