A fire erupted at Government College Women University Faisalabad on Wednesday after an electric scooter battery reportedly exploded while charging. The blaze destroyed a parked university bus and seven other electric scooters, while no injuries or casualties were reported.
Rescue 1122 teams quickly reached the university and brought the fire under control. According to Rescue 1122 spokesperson Faisal Anwar, the university’s fire safety system activated during the incident and alerted security officials.
Fire Safety System Helps Prevent Casualties
Faisal Anwar said support staff evacuated the affected area after receiving the alert. Rescue teams subsequently contained the blaze and prevented it from spreading further across the parking area.
University communication officer Dr Ammara Javed said the quick response helped prevent casualties. She added that students and staff remained safe, although the destruction of a university bus and several scooters raised concerns.
Incident Raises Questions Over Charging Safety
The fire has also raised questions about the safety of charging electric scooters on university premises. In particular, the location of charging points and their proximity to vehicles and other combustible materials could require further review.
Authorities had not established the exact cause of the fire at the time of reporting. Therefore, it remains too early to determine responsibility for the incident.
Experts note that battery fires can occur because of several factors, including physical damage, manufacturing defects and electrical faults. Incompatible chargers, overheating and problems with battery management systems can also contribute to battery-related fires.
Meanwhile, the university’s administration is expected to review safety arrangements following the incident. The authorities will need to determine the cause before taking further measures.
