Eight female students were injured in a knife attack at a middle school in Istanbul’s Basaksehir district on Tuesday. Police detained a 15-year-old girl suspected of carrying out the attack.
The incident happened at about 8:40am at Şehit Şamil Imam Hatip Middle School. The suspect reportedly attends another school in the area. She entered the school wearing its uniform before attacking students with a knife.
One Student in Critical Condition
Health officials said eight students suffered injuries in the attack. One student remains in critical condition and required surgery.
Two other students suffered moderate to serious injuries. The remaining five students sustained minor injuries and were expected to leave hospital after treatment.
Emergency teams took the injured students to nearby hospitals. Officials said medical teams were closely monitoring their conditions.
Police Detain Teenage Suspect
Istanbul Governor Davut Gul said the suspect lives in the same neighborhood as the school. She studies at a different school in the city.
Police detained the teenager after the attack. Authorities also increased security around the school as investigators began examining the incident.
Officials have not yet confirmed the motive behind the attack. An investigation is underway to establish what led to the incident.
The attack has raised fresh concerns about safety in Turkish schools. Turkey has reported several violent incidents involving students in recent months.
Last month, a teenager opened fire near a school in western Turkey. The shooting injured 11 students, including three who suffered serious injuries.
Earlier incidents in southern Turkey also increased concerns over violence around educational institutions. Authorities are now facing renewed pressure to strengthen school security and protect students.
