Poultry farming in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, after experiencing a brief period of growth, is now witnessing a decline, according to Jalil, a poultry farmer. He noted that the number of people involved in the poultry business has decreased by half, dropping from over 1.6 million due to dwindling profits. Many farmers have divested their capital from poultry and redirected it into other ventures.
Jalil mentioned that while the chicken project initiated during the previous PTI regime showed promise, it failed to significantly benefit poultry farming in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He attributed this failure to the neglect of poultry farming officials within the project.
Additionally, Jalil highlighted disparities in pricing between Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab, with rates in KP being consistently higher. This, coupled with the dependency on Punjab for supplies such as chicks, chicken feed, and medicines, has led to a significant decrease in poultry farming activity in the province.
Musharraf Khan, a veteran in the poultry industry, lamented the disappearance of local farming practices in small areas due to rising costs and inflation. He recalled a time when local farming was commonplace but stated that it has now become nearly extinct.
Former Director General Livestock Alamzeb Mohmand echoed these concerns, citing reasons such as farmers’ lack of familiarity with modern scientific methods and limited private sector partnerships as contributing factors to the decline.
Despite these challenges, efforts are being made to revive the poultry sector, with the restoration of poultry farms destroyed by terrorism in former tribal districts and the construction of new, larger poultry farms. These endeavors aim to introduce modern scientific techniques and increase production capacity, ultimately revitalizing the poultry industry in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
