Education Sector Receives Historic Boost in 2024 Budget Allocation

Education Sector

ISLAMABAD: In a concerted effort to bolster the education sector, the federal government has announced a record increase in budget allocation, on Sunday.

The Planning Commission disclosed that an astounding Rs 20.25 billion has been earmarked for the education sector in the 2024-25 budget, marking a substantial leap from the previous year’s allocation of Rs 8.5 billion for public sector development programs—an increase of 140 percent.

This significant surge in budget allocation has paved the way for the introduction of numerous new programs by the Federal Ministry of Education during the current fiscal year.

It signifies the government’s commitment to enhancing educational opportunities and infrastructure across the country.

Notably, this remarkable increase in budget allocation was necessitated by the initiation of several new programs by the Federal Ministry, reflecting a proactive approach towards addressing the pressing needs of the education sector.

Earlier, concerns had arisen when the Higher Education Commission (HEC) budget was reduced to a mere Rs 25 billion for the financial year 2024-25, down from Rs 65 billion.

This drastic cut had sparked apprehension among educational institutions and stakeholders regarding the future of higher education and developmental initiatives nationwide.

However, through collaborative efforts, including those of the Prime Minister, Minister of Finance and Education, and Planning Chairman, the Ministry of Finance has reinstated last year’s budget of Rs 65 billion for the HEC.

This reversal of the budget cut has been hailed as a significant victory for the education sector, ensuring continued support for learning and development programs.

The Chairman of HEC expressed gratitude to all stakeholders, including Chief Ministers and the Prime Minister, for their unwavering support in overturning the budget reduction, underscoring the collective commitment to promoting education and fostering national development.
