Dyson has launched the CameraJet, a $499 smart toothbrush designed to combine artificial intelligence, a built-in camera and targeted mouthrinse delivery.
The company says the device is designed to address one of the most difficult parts of daily oral care: cleaning the spaces between teeth.
Dyson Founder and Chief Engineer James Dyson said the company developed the product after research indicated that people frequently miss areas between their teeth where plaque can accumulate.
The CameraJet was developed over six years. A team of 661 Dyson engineers and 30 dental professionals worked on the technology during its development.
AI Camera Detects Hard-to-Reach Areas
The Dyson CameraJet features a 100,000-pixel macro camera with an integrated light.
The camera works with Dyson’s Gap Optical Targeting machine-learning system. The system was trained using 470,000 dental images collected during development.
The technology analyzes 28 live images every second. It can identify gaps between teeth within 100 milliseconds.
Once the system detects a gap, the toothbrush automatically releases a burst of mouthrinse toward the targeted area. This allows users to continue brushing while the device delivers the rinse to areas that may otherwise be difficult to reach.
The CameraJet connects through 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Its camera can also function as an endoscope, allowing users to view their teeth through a live feed in the accompanying app.
The app provides coverage maps, guided cleaning instructions, brushing and flossing insights, and other feedback.
Dyson says the camera images are not recorded or stored on the toothbrush or in the cloud. According to the company, the live images remain private to the user.
Dyson Develops a New Water-Jet System
Dyson worked with the Faculty of Dentistry at the National University of Singapore for more than five years while developing the CameraJet’s flossing technology.
The company also developed artificial plaque for testing the system.
According to Dyson, conventional water flossers can use narrow, high-pressure jets that pass through plaque without removing buildup around the targeted area.
The CameraJet uses a conical jet instead. The design is intended to cover a wider area while operating at lower pressure.
The toothbrush has a 12.5ml mouthrinse tank. Its design allows the system to operate at different angles.
Dyson calls the technology an anti-gravity tank. It is designed to reduce air pockets that could interrupt the jet when the toothbrush is held horizontally, including when users clean their back teeth.
Smart Brush Heads Track Usage
The CameraJet also uses technology to monitor its brush heads.
Each dual-bristle brush head contains an RFID tag. The system can identify the attached brush head and track how many times it has been used.
This feature allows users to monitor brush-head usage and determine when replacement may be needed.
The brush heads also include a sonic dampener designed to reduce operating noise.
Dyson has equipped the CameraJet with variable sonic oscillation. The technology changes the angle of the brush movement to help the bristles reach difficult areas.
External laboratory testing cited by Dyson found that the variable mode removed up to 69% more plaque from difficult-to-reach areas than market-leading premium electric toothbrushes.
Users can choose between automatic gap detection and manual jetting modes. Brushing intensity can also be adjusted according to individual preferences.
Dyson is also offering a sensitive-bristle brush head for users with sensitive teeth and gums.
CameraJet Price and Included Accessories
The Dyson CameraJet is priced at $499 and is available in Ceramic Ultra Blue and Ceramic Pink.
The package includes two standard brush heads, a charging dock, a charging cable and a travel case.
The charging dock can also refill the toothbrush’s mouthrinse tank in about three seconds.
Dyson recommends using clear, SLS-free mouthrinse and SLS-free toothpaste with the CameraJet. The company says excessive foam can interfere with the camera system.
Dyson has developed its own non-foaming toothpaste and low-foaming mouthrinse specifically for the CameraJet. However, the company has not yet announced when these products will be available.
