Babar Azam’s long-awaited return to first-class cricket has yet to produce the big innings expected from the Pakistan batter. His latest outing ended with another low score in the President’s Trophy.
Representing OGDCL in the fourth round, Babar managed only 21 runs in the first innings. He attempted a pull against fast bowler Arshad Iqbal but sent the short-pitched delivery toward the leg side.
The fielders completed the catch, bringing another disappointing innings to an early end.
Babar Fails to Make the Most of a Lifeline
Babar had already received an opportunity to extend his innings before his dismissal. When he reached 12 runs, fielders dropped what was described as an easy catch.
However, the Pakistan batter could not turn that reprieve into a substantial score. He eventually departed after adding only nine more runs to his total.
Consequently, his return to domestic cricket has remained difficult across his opening outings.
Just 37 Runs in Three Innings
Babar had struggled in the first two innings of the President’s Trophy as well. Following his latest dismissal, his combined score across three innings stands at only 37 runs.
The figure comes after his return to first-class domestic cricket following a seven-year absence.
Although Babar remains a prominent name in Pakistan cricket, his domestic comeback has so far produced limited returns. The latest innings has therefore added another question around his current form.
Seven Years After His Last First-Class Appearance
Babar last featured in first-class domestic cricket in December 2019. At the time, he captained Central Punjab in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.
Central Punjab went on to win the final against Northern by an innings and 16 runs. Since then, Babar had not appeared in domestic first-class cricket until his return in the current President’s Trophy.
His latest three innings have now produced 37 runs in total. Moreover, the missed opportunity after being dropped has made his latest low score even more notable.
For now, Babar’s return continues without the substantial innings that could have provided a much-needed boost to his domestic campaign.
