Dr. Hyder will assume his new role on August 15, 2025, bringing with him decades of experience in global health, academic leadership, and public health ethics.
Dr. Hyder currently serves as Professor of Global Health and Senior Associate Dean for Research and Innovation at the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University (GWSPH), where he has held leadership roles since 2018. During his tenure at GW, Dr. Hyder played a transformative role in shaping the schoolโs research infrastructure, championing a supportive, inclusive, and innovative research environment.
Among his key accomplishments at GWSPH, Dr. Hyder led the creation of the Research Support Team for Public Health & Law (formerly known as the Pod), and oversaw the reorganization of the Office of Research Excellence. He also established the Office of PhD & MS Studies and helped launch the online Summer Institutes.
Under his leadership, the school secured its first NIH Fogarty-funded global health training programsโmilestone achievements that enhanced GWโs global footprint. In addition, he provided strategic oversight to the schoolโs various research institutes and centers, and supported the expansion of annual research events such as GWSPH Research Day. Dr. Hyder was also instrumental in advancing university-wide leadership in bioethics and mentoring postdoctoral fellows across disciplines.
Lynn R. Goldman, Dean of the Milken Institute School of Public Health, lauded Dr. Hyderโs appointment, stating: โCongratulations to BU for recruiting Adnan Hyder as your new Dean! Dr. Hyder is an invaluable member of our community and has served as a trusted leader, researcher, advocate, and advisor for our students, faculty, and researchers over the last six years. I look forward to seeing the great impact he will have at BU.โ
Dr. Hyderโs distinguished global health career spans over 25 years, with a focus on improving public health in low- and middle-income countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. He has been a pioneer in highlighting the global burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and injuries.
His research has explored critical issues such as the loss of healthy life years, underlying risk factors, intervention strategies, economic costs, cultural determinants, and health policy developmentโall through a lens deeply rooted in bioethics.
Beyond his research, Dr. Hyder has trained thousands of health professionals worldwide, building public health capacity to prevent NCDs and injuries and to incorporate ethical principles into public health practice. He has authored more than 400 peer-reviewed publications and contributed to major global reports on issues including road safety, child injuries, and health systems development.
As Dr. Hyder transitions to his new role at Boston University, GWSPH will soon begin the process of identifying a new Senior Associate Dean for Research and Innovation. An interim appointment will be made in the near future, with a call for nominations expected soon.
