The Jabalia refugee camp in Gaza became a target of Israeli strikes on Sunday, raising fears of numerous casualties and people trapped under the debris. This is the second attack on this refugee camp in violation of the United Nations and human rights charters.
Ground footage depicted widespread destruction in residential areas, with individuals seen carrying the deceased and injured away from the impact zone. Last month, a double Israeli strike on the Jabalia refugee camp resulted in the death of over 80 people.
In a recent dawn attack on the UN-run Al-Fakhura school within the camp, converted into a shelter for displaced Palestinians, at least 50 people were reported killed, according to an official from the Gaza Strip health ministry told the media.
This marks the second occasion Israeli forces have struck Jabalia, the largest refugee camp in the besieged strip. Continuous Israeli strikes are hampering rescue efforts, making it challenging for responders to reach the victims.
The assault targeted multiple homes simultaneously, leveling an entire residential block with occupants inside. Since the truce ended on Friday, the Gaza health ministry reported at least 193 Palestinians killed, adding to the toll of over 15,000 Palestinians killed since the war’s onset, as per Reuters.
Israel’s vow to annihilate Hamas follows the October 7 attack in southern Israel, claiming 1,200 lives and taking more than 200 hostages. Amid indirect talks with Hamas for hostage release and military operations in Gaza, Israel is declaring some missing individuals as dead in captivity to provide solace to anxious relatives.
A medical committee is scrutinizing videos from the October 7 Hamas attack, cross-referencing them with the testimony of freed hostages during a recent Gaza truce to determine signs of lethal injuries among the abducted. This process, led by Hagar Mizrahi, a Health Ministry official, aims to address the crisis, now in its third month.
