Dr Osama Faces Inquiry Over Initial Post-Mortem Report
A medico-legal officer who conducted the first post-mortem examination of Karachi businessman Mir Raza Ali has been removed from his position following allegations of serious errors in the initial autopsy.
Dr Osama was removed from his role as a medico-legal officer after authorities identified alleged shortcomings in the examination and subsequent report. He has also been directed to appear before the relevant authorities as part of an inquiry into the matter.
The inquiry is expected to examine the initial post-mortem report, available medical evidence and the differences that later emerged after Mir Raza’s body was exhumed and examined again.
Authorities have not announced a final disciplinary finding against Dr Osama. His removal is linked to the investigation into alleged medico-legal lapses, while the inquiry process remains underway.
The development is significant because police had initially relied heavily on the first medico-legal report while investigating the circumstances surrounding Mir Raza’s death.
Sindh Inspector General of Police Javed Alam Odho has acknowledged that there were shortcomings in the initial investigation.
He said mistakes occurred during different stages of the case and that the medico-legal process had contributed to confusion. Odho also said a new committee had been constituted to address the issue and maintained that investigators were not protecting anyone.
Second Post-Mortem Reveals Major Differences
Questions surrounding the original autopsy intensified after Mir Raza’s body was exhumed on August 8 and examined by a medical board.
Karachi Police Surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed said the second examination revealed multiple injuries to Mir Raza’s head and face, including fractures involving the nasal bone and skull.
Injuries were also identified on his right flank and feet, while a congealed black substance was discovered in his mouth and throat.
One of the most important findings involved the direction of the gunshot.
According to Dr Syed, a fractured rib on Mir Raza’s back marked the gunshot entry point, while the bullet exited through the front of his body.
The finding raised serious questions about the original medico-legal assessment.
Police Surgeon Dr Syed had earlier pointed out that the reported entry wound, trajectory and exit wound in the first report appeared inconsistent with available photographs.
She had also noted that gunshot-residue testing, which could have been important when considering a possible suicide scenario, had not initially been conducted.
Additional reports from the second examination described marks of violence, injuries to the feet, blood staining in lower-body tissues and an approximately 12-centimetre injury and fracture involving the right thigh.
A deep injury and fracture were also identified around the jaw.
However, the final medical cause of death was initially kept reserved pending laboratory reports, including chemical analysis, DNA examination and gunshot-residue testing.
A separately reported chemical examination later detected acid particles on Mir Raza’s shirt as well as elements associated with gunshot residue, according to a report obtained by Geo News and cited by The News. These findings remain part of the wider forensic investigation.
New Police Team Takes Over Mir Raza Investigation
The differences between the first and second post-mortem reports also led to major changes in the police investigation.
A new investigation team headed by DIG Crime and Investigation Amir Farooqi has taken over the case.
The team has obtained records from the previous investigators and has met Mir Raza’s family and their lawyer, Advocate Jibran Nasir, to review the circumstances surrounding the case.
Police also added a murder charge to the case after the second post-mortem revealed multiple injuries and established that the gunshot entered through Mir Raza’s back.
Two police officials were previously suspended over alleged failures in preserving and investigating the crime scene.
Sharea Faisal SDPO Muhammad Arshad Afridi and Gulistan-i-Jauhar SHO Kamran Qureshi were suspended after authorities identified shortcomings in crime-scene preservation and investigation.
The case was also transferred from Ferozabad Police Station to Zaman Town Police Station.
Investigators have additionally reviewed alleged failures involving geofencing, Mir Raza’s mobile data records and forensic examination of his smartwatch.
The new investigation team has been attempting to obtain and examine evidence that was allegedly not properly collected during the early stages of the investigation.
Mir Raza Disappeared Hours Before Body Was Found
Mir Raza Ali, a 25-year-old businessman and owner of the Wafflix eatery, disappeared on July 28, 2026.
His body was discovered the following day in bushes near Shahi Qila Ground in Karachi’s Gulistan-i-Jauhar area with a gunshot wound.
His family consistently disputed the initial suggestion that the death could have been a suicide and pushed for a fresh medico-legal examination.
The family’s lawyer, Jibran Nasir, publicly alleged that Mir Raza had been tortured and murdered. Those allegations helped fuel demands for a new investigation, although the precise sequence of events and responsibility for his death remain matters for investigators and the courts to establish.
Following the second autopsy, the Sindh IGP reconstituted the investigation team.
Mir Raza’s father later expressed confidence that the fresh investigation was moving in the right direction and said the family would continue cooperating with investigators.
The removal of Dr Osama now adds another layer to the investigation, shifting attention not only to how Mir Raza died but also to how his death was medically and legally handled during the crucial first days of the case.
The inquiry into the initial autopsy, forensic testing and the new police investigation are continuing, and authorities have yet to announce final findings identifying those responsible for Mir Raza’s death.
