Diljit Dosanjh has received praise from Rahat Fateh Ali Khan after performing one of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s iconic qawwalis at London’s Wembley Arena. Dosanjh performed “Sanson Ki Mala Pe” for a packed audience last month, delivering a rendition of the classic piece that drew an emotional response from fans.
Rahat, who learned music under the guidance of his legendary uncle Nusrat, recently praised the Punjabi singer for his performance.
Rahat Praises Diljit’s Rendition
Speaking ahead of his concert in Toronto on Sunday, Rahat said major artists can feel nervous while performing Nusrat’s songs.
However, he said Diljit approached the qawwali with sincerity and did justice to the piece.
“It would be appropriate to say that very big artists get nervous when performing [Nusrat] sahab’s songs, but Diljit has fully done it justice, to the best of his ability, in a wonderful way with all his heart,” Rahat said.
He added that audiences could both see and hear the effort behind the performance and said he appreciated Dosanjh for it.
Diljit Makes History at Wembley
Dosanjh’s Wembley appearance also marked another major milestone in his international career.
On September 12, he became the first Punjabi artist to headline a show at Wembley, one of the world’s most prominent entertainment venues. The singer has built his international profile by blending Punjabi folk influences with contemporary sounds, including hip-hop.
Meanwhile, his recent performance showed a different side of his musical range as he took on one of Nusrat’s most recognised works.
More Milestones for Diljit
Dosanjh has continued to achieve major international milestones in recent years.
In 2023, he became the first Punjabi artist to perform at Coachella. He later made his debut on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon in June 2024.
In October that year, he became the first South Asian artist to appear on the cover of Billboard magazine, further expanding his presence on the global music scene.
