Punjabi singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh has finally broken his silence over the backlash surrounding his film Sardaar Ji 3. Speaking at a live concert in Kuala Lumpur, the actor addressed criticism about his collaboration with Pakistani actress Hania Aamir and explained why he chose not to respond earlier.
Addressing the Timeline of the Film
Dosanjh clarified that Sardaar Ji 3 was shot in February, well before the Pahalgam attack in April that strained India-Pakistan ties. He pointed out that while his film faced backlash, India-Pakistan cricket matches continued even after the tragic incident.
“When my film was shot, matches were already being played. The attack happened later, but cricket continued,” he said.
Expressing Grief Over the Pahalgam Attack
The actor expressed sorrow over the April 22 Pahalgam tragedy, for which India accused Pakistan, though Pakistan strongly denied involvement. Dosanjh emphasized his support for justice, stating: “I pray that whoever was responsible should get strict punishment.”
He highlighted the difference in perception. His film, completed before the attack, was criticized, while cricket matches between the two countries faced little opposition afterward.
Explaining His Silence
Dosanjh admitted he remained silent during the controversy despite having many answers. “I kept quiet, kept everything inside me. There are many things to say. But I chose silence,” he said.
He revealed that his silence was partly to avoid fueling negativity, even though he was branded as “anti-national” by sections of the media. During the concert, Dosanjh saluted the national flag, saying, “Woh mere desh da jhanda hai. Always respect.” He added firmly, “Everyone knows that a Punjabi Sardar can never be a traitor.”
Backlash Over Hania Aamir’s Casting
Earlier this year, Dosanjh faced intense criticism for featuring Pakistani actress Hania Aamir in Sardaar Ji 3. The film’s release sparked outrage, especially because it premiered globally without changes, except in India.
The Federation of Western India Cine Employees went as far as demanding that the film industry blacklist Dosanjh. The organization even called for the cancellation of his Indian citizenship, intensifying the controversy.
Cricket as a Point of Comparison
In his remarks, Dosanjh highlighted the double standard between cinema and cricket. While cultural collaborations, such as films with cross-border actors, were condemned, cricket matches between India and Pakistan continued to draw massive attention and official approval. His comments resonated with many who see inconsistencies in how art and sports are treated in the shadow of political conflict.
Diljit Dosanjh’s statement provides a new perspective on the Sardaar Ji 3 controversy. By comparing the backlash to the ongoing cricket matches, he exposed the selective criticism artists often face. His heartfelt remarks underline his patriotism and reaffirm his identity as a proud Punjabi Sardar.
The actor’s comments are likely to reignite debate within the film industry and among fans, as questions about cross-border collaborations and national identity continue to stir emotions.
