LAHORE: Deputy Inspector General Operations Faisal Kamran said serious questions have emerged after two suicide attempts were reported at the University of Lahore within the past 15 days. He stated that the police have intensified their investigations to determine the causes of the incidents.
DIG Faisal Kamran said Lahore police questioned the injured studentโs classmates as well as members of the university administration. He added that investigators have so far found no evidence suggesting pressure related to attendance, examinations, or any administrative action by the university. According to him, initial findings indicate no institutional issue directly linked to the incident.
Furthermore, the DIG said discussions with classmates also failed to reveal any apparent administrative conflict. As a result, investigators are considering the possibility that the student may have been experiencing domestic or personal stress. He confirmed that the student suffered severe injuries to her legs and remains under medical care.
Meanwhile, police have expanded the scope of the investigation. DIG Kamran said further facts are likely to emerge after forensic analysis of the studentโs mobile phone and call detail records. He also confirmed that police obtained five different CCTV footages from the university, which reportedly show the student jumping. Authorities are currently reviewing the footage as part of the inquiry.
University forms inquiry committee, police stress prevention
Emphasising prevention, the DIG said universities must take responsibility for identifying students under mental stress and providing timely support. He advised institutions in Lahore to deploy staff near CCTV-monitored areas to enhance supervision and help prevent similar incidents.
In response, the University of Lahore has formed an eight-member inquiry committee to probe the reported suicide attempt. According to the administration, retired Dean of the Faculty of Law Muhammad Bilal Khan will head the committee. Other members include Dr Mughis, Dr Ahmad Bilal, Farukh Hafeez, Dr Ayesha Mahmood, Ali Aslam, Muhammad Amir, and Ismahan Ramzan.
The committee will conduct a detailed investigation and submit its report upon completion, as police investigations continue.
