Bollywood actress Dia Mirza has revealed how the poor box office performance of her early films affected her career, leaving her sidelined from major feature film opportunities despite her acting potential.
Reflecting on her 25-year journey in the film industry, Mirza said the commercial failures of her projects became a significant emotional setback during her early years as an aspiring actress.
Her Bollywood debut, *Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein*, released in 2001 and featured R. Madhavan and Saif Ali Khan. Although the romantic film initially underperformed commercially, it later gained cult status and attracted a devoted audience.
Mirza explained that when her films failed to perform well, opportunities in mainstream cinema became increasingly limited. She said the experience taught her to reconsider her priorities and focus on meaningful storytelling rather than pursuing stardom alone.
By 2004–05, the actress had begun choosing projects based on their substance and the values of the people involved. She also ventured into film production, creating opportunities for stories she believed deserved attention.
Her career subsequently gained renewed momentum through projects such as *Sanju* and the web series *Kaafir*. These performances helped her secure opportunities that had remained inaccessible for years.
Mirza has consistently emphasised that she values the depth of a character over the length of a role. She continues to seek complex female characters and meaningful narratives, demonstrating her commitment to evolving as an actor rather than measuring success solely through commercial performance.
