US President Donald Trump says he is nearing a decision on whether to reach an agreement with Iran or resume military attacks, as tensions across the Middle East continue to rise.
In an interview with Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures, Trump said Washington faced two options: negotiate a deal with Tehran or take further military action. His remarks highlight the uncertainty surrounding efforts to resolve the conflict.
Trump Weighs Diplomacy Against Military Action
Trump said he was considering whether to make an agreement or “finish it off,” signalling that renewed strikes remain a possibility.
He has suggested that US attacks could resume after the November 3 midterm elections. Washington has also moved additional military assets towards the Persian Gulf, including a third aircraft carrier group.
However, Trump told reporters on Sunday that no strike would take place that day. He has continued to leave open the possibility of a diplomatic breakthrough.
Strait of Hormuz Remains a Key Issue
The Strait of Hormuz remains central to the standoff because of its importance to global energy supplies and maritime trade.
Trump has claimed that Iran wants an agreement involving the strategic waterway. However, Tehran has disputed reports that it offered to reopen the strait in exchange for Washington lifting its naval blockade.
The disagreement underscores the challenges facing diplomatic efforts, particularly over maritime access, sanctions and security arrangements.
Regional Tensions Raise Concerns
The situation remains volatile as threats against American interests and shipping in the region continue. Washington has also reduced diplomatic and military staffing in parts of the Middle East amid growing security concerns.
Meanwhile, renewed attacks could widen the conflict and increase risks for regional countries and international shipping.
For now, Trump has not announced a final decision. Whether Washington pursues negotiations or resumes military action remains uncertain, leaving the region on alert for further developments.
