ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Thursday confirmed it is directly relaying messages between the United States and Iran in efforts to ease tensions and end the ongoing Middle East conflict.
Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar dismissed media speculation, stating on X that indirect talks are underway through Pakistan. He added that Washington has shared 15 proposals, which Tehran is currently reviewing.
Meanwhile, officials in Islamabad described the current week as critical for a potential breakthrough. However, they noted that Iranian authorities remain cautious due to longstanding mistrust. At the same time, Pakistan expects a US delegation to arrive soon for further consultations.
Dar also acknowledged support from Tรผrkiye and Egypt, saying both countries are contributing to diplomatic efforts. He reiterated that Pakistan remains committed to promoting regional stability through dialogue and diplomacy.
Notably, this marks Islamabadโs first official confirmation of its mediating role. Earlier, senior officials had indicated that US proposals were conveyed to Iran via Pakistan, although they spoke anonymously. Given Pakistanโs ties with both Washington and Tehran, analysts view it as a natural intermediary.
In addition, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Dar have maintained regular contact with Iranian leaders. Military chief Asim Munir also engaged diplomatically, including a recent conversation with US President Donald Trump.
However, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi denied formal negotiations, stating that only messages are being exchanged through friendly countries.
Tensions have remained high since the February 28 US-Israeli offensive on Iran, which triggered retaliatory strikes and widespread regional instability.
