Cyclone Shakti has rapidly intensified in the northeastern Arabian Sea and is now classified as a severe cyclonic storm. The Pakistan Meteorological Department confirmed that the system lies about 390 kilometres southwest of Karachi as of Saturday morning.
The cyclone is expected to sustain strong winds ranging between 90 and 100 kilometres per hour near its centre. Gusts could reach up to 110 kilometres per hour by the evening.
Strong Winds and Rough Seas Along Sindh Coast
Sindh’s coastal belt is already witnessing rough sea conditions. Gusty winds ranging between 40 and 50 kilometres per hour are anticipated along coastal areas. Near the shoreline, gusts may reach 55 kilometres per hour, raising risks for small boats and fishing vessels.
The storm’s influence has extended across the central-northern and northern Arabian Sea. These rough conditions are expected to persist for at least 36 hours, according to meteorological officials.
Heavy Rainfall Forecast for Sindh and Balochistan
Under Cyclone Shakti’s impact, heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast in multiple regions. Districts including Badin, Thatta, Sujawal, Jamshoro, Hub, Lasbela, Awaran, and Kech are on alert. Karachi is expected to experience light to moderate showers accompanied by thunder.
Authorities have issued warnings about the possibility of urban flooding in low-lying areas. High tides and sea intrusion could worsen drainage issues, leading to waterlogging in coastal cities.
Fishermen Advised to Stay Ashore
The Meteorological Department has strongly advised fishermen not to venture into the open sea until October 5. Sea conditions are expected to range from rough to very rough, and in some areas, high to very high.
Along the Makran coast, strong winds have already battered towns like Ormara and Pasni. Boats anchored along the coast remain at risk. Several local fishermen have been forced to pull their boats ashore, while some vessels have sustained damage.
Preparedness and Alerts Issued
The Fisheries Department has urged fishing communities to remain cautious over the next 24 hours. Local authorities have also been asked to prepare for emergencies, including risks of flooding and high tides.
The Cyclone Warning Centre in Karachi is monitoring the situation closely. Updates have been shared with national and provincial disaster management authorities, coastal development agencies, and port authorities in Karachi and Gwadar.
Officials emphasized that the trajectory of Cyclone Shakti will become clearer by Saturday evening. Although Karachi is not directly in the cyclone’s path, the city remains under threat of heavy rainfall, stormy winds, and dangerous sea conditions.
Key Safety Measures for Coastal Communities
Residents of coastal districts have been urged to remain vigilant. Authorities recommend avoiding unnecessary travel near the sea, securing loose items around homes, and keeping emergency kits ready.
Disaster management teams are on high alert to respond in case of flooding or storm-related damage. Fishermen and coastal communities have been reminded that the next two days remain critical.
