ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has underscored the vital role of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) in bolstering Pakistan’s economy, emphasizing that collaboration in the space sector reflects the enduring friendship between Pakistan and China.
Speaking at the signing ceremony of a space research cooperation agreement in Islamabad, the prime minister acknowledged China’s support in advancing Pakistan’s space technology. He stated that the agreement marks a significant milestone, with Pakistan’s Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) set to collaborate with Chinese authorities on space exploration initiatives.
Expanding Opportunities for Youth
PM Shehbaz highlighted that enhanced space cooperation will open new avenues for Pakistani youth, calling for innovative efforts in their development. He described the agreement as a major step toward Pakistan’s aspirations for human spaceflight.
Federal Minister for Information Atta Tarar announced that Pakistan’s national flag will one day reach space, with China set to train young Pakistani astronauts. Minister Ahsan Iqbal also hailed the agreement as a crucial step toward technological progress.
Meanwhile, the director-general of China’s space agency reaffirmed China’s commitment to fostering international cooperation in space research.
A Historic Agreement
SUPARCO has termed the agreement with China’s Manned Space Agency a historic milestone, paving the way for Pakistan’s first astronaut to travel to the Chinese space station.
Under the agreement, two Pakistani astronauts will undergo specialized training at China’s Astronaut Centre, with one selected for a mission to the space station as a scientific payload specialist.
The selection process for Pakistan’s first astronaut is expected to be completed by 2026, with the mission focused on advanced scientific experiments.
