An anti-terrorism court in Peshawar has issued arrest warrants for Sohail Afridi and four other Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders in a case involving the May 2023 attack on the Radio Pakistan building.
The court issued the warrants on Wednesday, October 28, after the prosecution submitted a supplementary charge sheet naming the five individuals as accused. Judge Wali Mohammad Khan directed authorities to arrest them because they had not appeared in custody.
The other individuals named in the charge sheet include former provincial ministers Taimoor Saleem Jhagra and Kamran Bangash, PTI Peshawar district president Irfan Saleem, and party activist Amir Khan Chamkani.
Forensic Reports Lead to New Accusations
The supplementary charge sheet follows findings from the Punjab Forensic Science Agency and the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA). Investigators examined video footage allegedly showing the suspects during the attack and compared facial features and photographs to establish their identities.
According to the prosecution, forensic analysis found matches between the five individuals and people visible in the footage. NADRA also provided identity-related findings that investigators used during the inquiry.
However, PTI leaders have questioned the authenticity of the video clips, arguing that the footage does not relate to the May 10, 2023, attack on the Radio Pakistan building in Peshawar. The allegations remain subject to judicial proceedings.
Court Schedules Next Hearing for November 4
The case concerns the attack and arson at Radio Pakistan’s Peshawar premises during protests that followed the arrest of former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan in May 2023.
The incident caused extensive damage to the historic broadcasting facility, including equipment and valuable archives containing decades of regional-language recordings.
Meanwhile, the court has scheduled the next hearing for November 4. The proceedings will continue as authorities pursue the newly nominated accused and address the allegations presented by the prosecution.
