Pakistan may face an exceptionally intense winter later this month. Long-range weather models indicate a powerful cold wave approaching the region.
This system is expected to affect the country between January 16 and January 25. Peak intensity may occur during the final days of this period.
Meteorologists link this pattern to a strong surge of cold air from Siberia and Central Asia. As a result, temperatures could fall sharply nationwide.
Lahore Snowfall: A Rare but Possible Scenario
Forecast models suggest Lahore could experience snowfall. This possibility remains extremely rare. However, simulations show up to five inches of snow under peak conditions.
Minimum temperatures in Lahore may drop between -2°C and -4°C. Daytime temperatures could stay near freezing levels.
If this scenario occurs, it would mark Lahore’s first snowfall since 1878. Such an event would be considered historically significant.
Why Temperatures May Drop So Sharply
Meteorologists explain that shifting atmospheric patterns are driving this system. Initially, temperature fluctuations may occur due to western disturbances.
Later, a stronger low-pressure system may pull intense cold air into the region. This process could lead to sustained freezing conditions across much of Pakistan.
Nationwide Impact Expected Across Provinces
The cold wave may affect nearly all regions. Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa could see widespread frost. Lower Sindh may also experience unusually low temperatures.
Islamabad and Rawalpindi may see snowfall in urban areas. Temperatures could drop below -5°C.
Murree may record temperatures near -13°C, with heavy snowfall accumulation. Quetta could experience extreme cold between -15°C and -20°C, along with strong winds.
Karachi may approach near-freezing temperatures. Such conditions were last recorded in 1929.
Additional Cities Under Snow or Frost Threat
Snow or sleet may occur in Gujranwala, Faisalabad, and Sialkot. Abbottabad and Muzaffarabad may also see wintry conditions.
Large parts of Balochistan could face snow, frost, and strong winds. These conditions may disrupt travel and daily routines.
Warnings and Forecast Outlook
Extreme cold warnings are expected for parts of Balochistan between January 21 and January 25. Residents should prepare for frostbite risks and hazardous travel.
Weather experts stress that this remains a long-range forecast. Conditions may change as the system approaches. A detailed update is expected on January 16.
