US President Donald Trump has warned of a military response after Iran launched attacks targeting US forces in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Speaking to a Private News Channel on Monday, Trump said Washington would respond forcefully to the attacks. His warning came after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for launching ballistic missiles towards the King Hussein and Azraq airbases in Jordan, along with explosive drones targeting Al Minhad Air Base in the UAE.
The IRGC described the strikes as retaliation for a US attack on Larak Island on Sunday. The reported US operation targeted efforts to deploy sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz, a key international route for global oil shipments.
Trump said US air defence systems intercepted most of the incoming missiles and drones. He added that one missile was deliberately not intercepted after authorities determined that it was unlikely to cause significant damage.
Trump Intensifies Pressure on Iran
Trump also escalated his criticism of Iran’s leadership, accusing the government of carrying out a deadly crackdown on protesters.
In a post on Truth Social, he described Iran as a “failed nation” and called for its leaders to face trial for alleged crimes against humanity. Trump claimed that more than 100,000 protesters had been killed, although the figure has not been independently verified.
The US president further claimed that Iran’s military and economic capabilities had suffered major setbacks. He said the country had lost much of its military strength and described its leadership as being in “total disarray.”
His latest comments come amid growing tensions between Washington and Tehran over military operations, sanctions and developments surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.
Diplomatic Breakthrough Remains Uncertain
Despite the escalating rhetoric, Trump said Iran was seeking a meeting with the United States. However, he expressed doubts about an immediate diplomatic breakthrough and argued that US sanctions were beginning to place significant pressure on Tehran.
The latest confrontation has further complicated efforts to reduce tensions between the two countries. With military threats and economic pressure continuing simultaneously, prospects for a diplomatic resolution remain uncertain.
