The Anti-Corruption Establishment Punjab has launched an investigation against former Khanewal Deputy Commissioner Maleeha Rasheed. Authorities initiated the inquiry on Thursday over alleged financial irregularities in a public development project.
The investigation follows allegations of corruption involving the Akbar Bazaar beautification project in Khanewal. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif reportedly ordered the inquiry after receiving information about the alleged financial misconduct.
According to initial reports, investigators suspect that the former deputy commissioner worked alongside a contractor to misuse public funds. The contractor allegedly received advance payments but failed to complete the project within the expected timeframe.
Akbar Bazaar Project Faces Corruption Allegations
The beautification project reportedly experienced significant delays despite the release of advance payments. Furthermore, the contractor allegedly fled after receiving the money, leaving the development work incomplete.
Investigators are now examining the financial transactions and circumstances surrounding the project. They will also assess the alleged involvement of officials responsible for supervising and managing the development work.
The inquiry aims to establish whether public funds faced misappropriation during the project’s execution. Authorities will determine the responsibilities of those involved after reviewing the available evidence.
Authorities Begin Investigation Against Former DC
Meanwhile, Director General of the Crime Control Department Sohail Zafar Chattha has not confirmed whether authorities have taken Maleeha Rasheed into custody.
The investigation remains focused on the alleged financial irregularities and the contractor’s role. Officials are expected to examine relevant records to establish the facts surrounding the case.
The allegations have drawn attention to accountability within district administration. However, the inquiry has not established the former deputy commissioner’s guilt.
Further action will depend on the findings of investigators. Authorities will determine whether the available evidence supports formal legal proceedings against those allegedly involved.
The case highlights renewed scrutiny of public development projects and the handling of government funds in Punjab.
