A judicial commission investigating the murder of businessman Mir Raza Ali has declined a request from Dr Osama Shaikh to record an additional statement. Dr Shaikh served as the medico-legal officer who conducted the first autopsy of the slain businessman.
The commission is headed by Sindh High Court Justice Omar Sial. In an order issued after Monday’s hearing, the judge explained the reasons for rejecting the request.
Commission Declines Further Testimony
According to the order, Dr Shaikh had appeared on social media and indicated that he had more information to share than he provided earlier. During the hearing, Justice Sial questioned him about the nature of the additional statement.
The judge asked whether Dr Shaikh intended to argue that Mir Raza’s death was a suicide rather than a murder. However, Dr Shaikh clarified that he did not support a suicide theory and instead wanted to defend his earlier conclusion that the bullet entered from the front.
The case has remained controversial due to conflicting autopsy findings. Karachi Police Surgeon Dr Summaiyya Syed previously highlighted flaws in the first postmortem examination conducted by Dr Shaikh.
Autopsy Findings Remain Central Issue
Following the controversy, authorities exhumed Mir Raza’s body and conducted a second autopsy. The later examination concluded that the 25-year-old was shot in the back and ruled out the possibility of suicide.
Dr Syed also informed the commission during an earlier hearing that she received threats after challenging the findings of the first postmortem report. Her testimony added further attention to the dispute surrounding the case.
In his order, Justice Sial stated that Dr Shaikh’s purpose appeared to be criticizing the police surgeon and the chief minister. He stressed that the commission was not a platform for personal attacks.
The judge concluded that the commission already possessed sufficient information to determine the facts and assess any negligence. Therefore, he formally rejected the request for a further statement.
