The colonial-era Lodhran Railway Station will be preserved and renovated to enhance passenger facilities and protect its historic value. The announcement was made after a senior district official inspected the station and reviewed its deteriorating condition. Authorities confirmed that the renovation aims to balance heritage conservation with modern travel needs.
During the inspection, the deputy commissioner examined the station’s infrastructure and overall maintenance status. Officials discussed the building’s historical significance and highlighted the urgent need for restoration. The station remains one of the most important railway junctions in southern Punjab due to its strategic location.
Situated on the Lahore–Karachi main railway line, the Lodhran junction has played a vital role since before the Partition of 1947. Historically, it served rural populations traveling toward Lahore through Vehari and Mailsi. It also provided a critical link to Karachi via Rohri and Hyderabad. Over time, this connectivity helped integrate regional trade and passenger movement.
The station continues to hold national importance today. It remains the only Pakistan Railways station from where a double railway track extends up to Karachi. This route supports express passenger services and freight trains transporting goods from Karachi’s port to upcountry destinations. As a result, the station remains essential for economic and logistical operations.
Despite its operational significance, the station has suffered from years of neglect. Officials acknowledged that the building remains in poor condition and lacks basic passenger facilities. Limited repair work has been carried out using district funds, but authorities confirmed that these measures were insufficient. Therefore, a comprehensive renovation plan has now been prioritized.
During the visit, senior district officials and railway representatives briefed the administration on the station’s condition and historical background. Authorities confirmed that additional funding would be allocated to preserve the structure’s architectural heritage. The renovation will focus on improving safety, lighting, and passenger comfort while retaining original features.
As part of the upgrade, LED lighting will be installed in passenger lounges to improve visibility and energy efficiency. CCTV cameras will also be placed at key locations inside and outside the station to strengthen security. Officials stated that these steps would enhance the travel experience and ensure safer operations.
