Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz strongly criticised the Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), drawing a parallel between the events of May 9, 2023, and India’s recent military aggression against Pakistan.
Speaking at a student gathering in Sargodha, Maryam Nawaz warned against the dangers of ideological manipulation, stating that just as devices must be protected from viruses, the youth must safeguard their minds from harmful political influences.
The chief minister recalled the May 9 incidents, during which PTI supporters attacked sensitive state institutions, including military facilities. She described these acts as unprecedented betrayals, asserting that such actions paralleled enemy aggression.
“You can disagree with political figures, but setting military installations on fire crosses all boundaries. These were the same facilities from where our Air Force launched operations to down five enemy jets. Those responsible for May 9 did what our enemies couldn’t achieve in decades,” she said.
Maryam further condemned the PTI leadership and its supporters, claiming that their actions mimicked terrorism. She urged students not to become pawns in foreign or domestic agendas aimed at destabilising Pakistan.
“Never speak ill of your country or act against its interests. Always stand as a barrier against chaos and division. Be the strength and defence of your homeland,” she told the audience.
The remarks came in the wake of a recent escalation between India and Pakistan. Indian forces launched attacks on Pakistani territory earlier this month, prompting a retaliatory response by Pakistan’s military. The conflict resulted in significant casualties, with over 50 Pakistani lives lost before a ceasefire was brokered.
