Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has approved a major development package worth Rs21.53 billion for Karachiโs infrastructure upgrade. The plan includes Rs13 billion dedicated to improving road networks under Town Municipal Corporations. The approval aims to reduce congestion and restore severely damaged roads across the city. Moreover, the initiative seeks to improve public safety and support economic activity.
Roads Across Seven Districts Identified
Authorities identified 409 roads across Karachiโs seven districts for rehabilitation. Out of these, 400 roads require patchwork repairs, while nine need full reconstruction. Additionally, officials allocated funds for sewerage and water supply improvements. As a result, total costs for this component reached Rs12.57 billion. Malir recorded the highest number of damaged roads at 98. It was followed by West, Central, South, East, Korangi, and Keamari districts. However, Keamari carried the highest estimated cost at Rs2.32 billion.
TMCs to Lead Internal Road Rehabilitation
A total of 24 Town Municipal Corporations will execute internal road rehabilitation schemes. These TMCs lacked funds to manage repairs independently. Therefore, provincial support became necessary. Major allocations include Manghopir, Gadap, Baldia, and Mauripur. Most schemes involve patch repairs. However, selected areas will receive complete end-to-end road rehabilitation.
KMC Assigned Major Arteries
The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation will rehabilitate 26 major roads. Estimated costs for reconstruction and resurfacing stand at Rs5.53 billion. Furthermore, funds were allocated for sewerage repairs, storm drain walls, and streetlights. Overall, KMC-led projects total Rs8.53 billion.
CM Orders Speed, Transparency, and Coordination
The chief minister stressed urgent execution of all approved projects. He directed departments to avoid repeated digging through coordinated planning. Meanwhile, the finance department received instructions to release funds immediately. He emphasized transparency and quality control. Authorities will monitor timelines strictly. Public convenience remains the central priority of the plan.
Long-Term Focus on Urban Stability
This approval follows a previous Rs25 billion Karachi package announced after heavy rain damage. Together, these measures reflect a sustained push to stabilize Karachiโs infrastructure. The government aims to restore confidence in urban governance.
