China’s artificial intelligence sector has suffered a massive stock market collapse, wiping out approximately $480 billion in market value in less than four months.
The sharp decline has raised concerns about inflated technology valuations, slowing AI demand, and growing restrictions on Chinese exports.
According to Reuters, China’s STAR50 index, which tracks major semiconductor and technology companies, has fallen approximately 40% from its recent highs.
Chinese AI Stocks Lose Billions as Investor Confidence Weakens
The selloff has disrupted a two-year technology rally that attracted significant investment.
China’s broader blue-chip stock index has also declined nearly 20% from its June peak.
Analysts believe excessive valuations, weakening investor confidence, and potential US trade restrictions contributed to the downturn.
Meanwhile, technology companies that previously enjoyed exceptional growth have suffered substantial losses.
Major Technology Companies Face Heavy Losses
Shares of Chinese robotics manufacturer Unitree have fallen approximately 50% since their August listing.
Semiconductor manufacturer CXMT has lost more than 25% of its market value over the past month.
Similarly, chipmakers MetaX Integrated Circuits and Moore Threads Technology have experienced significant declines.
Optical component manufacturers Zhongji Innolight and Eoptolink Technology have also fallen approximately 60% from earlier peaks.
Could China’s AI Market Crash Affect Global Investors?
Goldman Sachs estimates that AI-related shares represent approximately 42% of China’s stock market capitalization.
The widespread losses have therefore affected numerous investors, particularly smaller shareholders.
Despite the downturn, some analysts believe lower valuations could create selective investment opportunities.
However, uncertainty surrounding technology demand and export restrictions remains significant.
The market collapse highlights growing concerns about speculative investment and financial risks across China’s rapidly expanding AI industry.
