China has raised fresh concerns over Afghanistan’s security situation during a United Nations meeting. Consequently, Beijing warned that terrorist groups continue threatening regional stability.
China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Sun Lei, addressed the session on international peace and security. He said militant groups operating from Afghanistan have increased their capability to launch cross-border attacks.
Furthermore, Sun described terrorist organisations in Afghanistan as a serious threat to neighbouring countries. He urged the Taliban authorities to fulfil their counter-terrorism commitments without delay.
China Calls For Stronger Counter-Terrorism Action
Sun called on the Taliban to take decisive action against all terrorist groups operating inside Afghanistan. Moreover, he urged the international community to maintain close attention to counter-terrorism efforts.
He stressed that developments in Afghanistan continue affecting regional and global security. Therefore, he said sustained international cooperation remains essential to address emerging threats.
Analysts Highlight Regional Security Concerns
Analysts believe the Taliban have not fully implemented counter-terrorism commitments made under the Doha Agreement. Consequently, concerns persist over militant groups using safe havens inside Afghanistan.
Experts also warned that terrorism and narcotics trafficking continue destabilising the region. Additionally, they said proceeds from illicit activities help finance armed groups and fuel cross-border insecurity.
