ISLAMABAD: China has ramped up construction on Pakistan’s Mohmand Dam in response to India’s recent warning to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty and potentially halt water flow to Pakistan.
Chinese state media outlet CCTV reported that concrete filling has officially begun at the dam site, marking what it described as a “critical construction milestone” and the start of an accelerated phase in the project’s development.
The Mohmand Hydropower Project has been under construction since September 2019, located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. It is being built by China Energy Engineering Corporation, a state-owned firm, and Pakistan and China consider it a key national infrastructure initiative.
Originally slated for completion in 2026, the project is now being fast-tracked amid rising regional tensions.
The acceleration follows India’s recent announcement that it would suspend the decades-old Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan.
The move came after a deadly attack in Indian-administered Kashmir on April 22, which New Delhi attributed to Pakistan-based groups — a claim Islamabad has strongly denied.
