Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered an extensive rescue operation after a powerful earthquake struck Tibet, killing at least 16 people and injuring dozens.
The magnitude 7 earthquake hit northern Tibet on Thursday night, October 22, affecting the city of Nagqu and surrounding areas. Rescue teams are searching affected communities as authorities assess the damage and provide emergency assistance.
Hundreds of Homes Collapse After Powerful Tremor
The earthquake caused at least 339 homes and 20 livestock sheds to collapse, according to local authorities.
Reports indicated that 32 people were injured, including 11 who suffered serious injuries. Officials have continued assessing the situation as rescue operations progress.
The United States Geological Survey placed the epicentre about 191 kilometres east-northeast of Nagqu, at a depth of approximately 18 kilometres. The region’s remote location and high altitude could make rescue efforts more challenging.
Thousands of Rescue Workers Mobilised
Authorities deployed more than 1,600 personnel to support search and rescue operations. Emergency supplies, including around 3,000 tents, 1,000 prefabricated housing units, folding beds and winter clothing, were also sent to affected communities.
President Xi called for every possible effort to locate missing people, treat the injured and minimise further casualties.
Meanwhile, the earthquake disrupted communications in some areas. Railway authorities also suspended train movements as a precaution.
Rockfalls forced officials to close part of National Highway 317, allowing only emergency and rescue vehicles to pass while crews cleared debris.
Severe Weather Could Complicate Relief Efforts
Authorities have warned that intermittent snowfall is expected over the coming days, potentially creating additional difficulties for rescue teams and displaced residents.
The earthquake was described by Chinese state media as the strongest to hit the region in five years.
Rescue workers continue to assist affected families, while officials monitor the situation and prepare further relief measures. The immediate priority remains locating survivors, treating injured residents and providing shelter to people whose homes were damaged or destroyed.
