China has introduced traffic-control robots to assist police at busy intersections. The machines are currently operating as part of a pilot programme in Hangzhou.
Developed by technology company SUPCON Information, the T2 robot stands 1.88 metres tall. It weighs 98 kilograms and moves on wheels.
The robot can detect helmetless e-bike riders and other traffic violations. It then issues warnings and performs traffic-control gestures.
Robots Take Over Repetitive Traffic Tasks
The T2 robot uses cameras, radar, and onboard computing systems. These technologies help it monitor road users and identify violations.
The machine can detect riders without helmets and vehicles crossing stop lines. It can also identify pedestrians who ignore traffic signals.
Additionally, the robot answers questions about directions, parking, and traffic regulations. An emergency function also connects users with local police.
SUPCON has deployed 15 robots in Hangzhou since May. The company says the robots have issued more than 170,000 warnings.
Expansion Plans Underway Across China
According to SUPCON, the robots operate autonomously from 7am to 6pm. They move between designated positions without remote control.
The company claims violation-recognition accuracy exceeds 95 percent. However, weather conditions and strong sunlight can affect performance.
Currently, nearly 50 robots operate across eight cities in three Chinese provinces. SUPCON expects deployments to reach around 200 units by year-end.
Meanwhile, robotics firms see potential for exporting similar systems overseas. However, experts say international deployment would require compliance with local regulations.
Police robots would also need integration with local law-enforcement systems. Data protection requirements could present additional challenges in foreign markets.
