A Chinese court sentenced a kindergarten owner to life imprisonment after 247 children suffered lead poisoning. School staff had mixed toxic industrial paint into their food to make meals look more attractive.
The shocking case took place at Heshi Peixin Kindergarten in Tianshui, Gansu province.
The court found owner Li Huifang guilty of producing and selling toxic food. It also sentenced executive principal Zhu Jinglin to 15 years in prison.
Four kitchen workers received prison sentences ranging from six to eight years.
Toxic Paint Found in Children’s Meals
Investigators discovered that school management had ordered kitchen staff to add industrial paint pigments to food.
Workers used the harmful substances in colorful cakes and sausage rolls to attract more children.
The school purchased the paint online despite clear warnings that it was unsafe for consumption.
The scandal emerged in July 2025 after parents reported alarming health problems.
Several children suffered stomach pain, poor appetite, and hair loss.
Medical tests later revealed that 247 of the 251 children had high lead levels in their blood.
Officials Face Investigation Over Cover-Up
Investigators also found evidence of corruption and altered medical reports.
Hospital workers had changed blood test results, while school management had bribed local officials.
Authorities investigated at least 27 government officials over their alleged involvement.
The court ordered authorities to seize assets worth 500,000 yuan from Li. It also fined Zhu 300,000 yuan.
Health experts warn that lead poisoning can cause permanent brain and nervous system damage.
The case has raised serious concerns about food safety, school inspections, and child protection in China.
