Anthropic, the artificial intelligence company behind the Claude chatbot, has filed for an initial public offering (IPO) in the United States despite reporting an $80.7 billion net loss during the first half of 2026.
The company submitted its filing to the US Securities and Exchange Commission on October 26. It plans to list its shares on the Nasdaq stock exchange under the ticker symbol ANT, although it has not yet announced the share price or the number of shares it intends to sell.
Anthropic’s filing highlights the rapid expansion of its business alongside the significant financial challenges facing advanced AI developers.
Revenue Surges Despite Massive Losses
Anthropic reported approximately $16.3 billion in revenue for the first six months of 2026, compared with $1.16 billion during the same period last year. This sharp increase reflects growing demand for its AI products and services.
However, the reported net loss requires further explanation. Approximately $72 billion of the loss resulted from accounting adjustments linked to the changing value of convertible financial instruments, rather than ordinary operating expenses.
The company’s operating loss stood at around $693 million during the first half of 2026. Nevertheless, Anthropic warned investors that its expenses would continue increasing as it develops more advanced AI systems.
High Infrastructure Costs Raise Investor Questions
Anthropic relies on major technology companies, including Amazon and Google, for investment and computing infrastructure. It has also committed substantial funds to future computing capacity and related services.
Meanwhile, the proposed IPO could provide additional capital for expansion and research. Some market estimates suggest the company could achieve a valuation between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion, although final terms remain unconfirmed.
The listing also comes as investors increasingly question whether the enormous spending on artificial intelligence will generate sustainable returns. Consequently, Anthropic’s public-market debut could influence investor confidence in the wider AI industry.
