ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) made an important announcement about the upcoming Islamabad-Rawalpindi train. The rail service is set to become Pakistan’s first eco-friendly commuter rail link. Officials confirmed that the modern service will likely operate as an electric vehicle (EV) train, offering citizens a safe, affordable, and sustainable travel option.
CDA and Pakistan Railways to Sign MoU
A high-level meeting was held at the Capital Development Authority (CDA) Headquarters on Wednesday. CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner of Islamabad Muhammad Ali Randhwa chaired the session.
During the meeting, it was announced that CDA and Pakistan Railways will soon sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This agreement will pave the way for the launch of the Islamabad–Rawalpindi EV train service.
Eco-Friendly Technology and Ridership Survey
The meeting featured a comprehensive review of the project’s business model, train layout, and the use of eco-friendly technology. A detailed briefing was also provided on the ridership survey conducted for the EV Train Project.
Randhwa stressed that the initiative would strictly follow regulations required for carbon credit integration. He also highlighted potential extensions to other areas of Islamabad by utilizing the existing railway network.
Smooth Connectivity with Feeder Buses
To ensure seamless travel, feeder buses will connect passengers to Margalla Railway Station. Importantly, these feeder buses will also be electric, making the entire network environmentally friendly. Officials noted that this connectivity will reduce traffic congestion in both Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
Modernization and Benefits for Citizens
Randhwa emphasized that the EV train will be implemented according to international standards and best practices. The project is designed to provide affordable, comfortable, and safe travel for daily commuters. Moreover, it will modernize the region’s transportation system while supporting Islamabad’s overall development.
Senior CDA and Pakistan Railways officials, including Board Member Engineering Syed Nafasat Raza and Member Planning and Design Dr. Khalid Hafiz, also attended the meeting.
