Newly surfaced CCTV footage has captured Armaghan Qureshi, the prime suspect in the Mustafa Amir murder case, opening fire on a police team during a raid at his residence in Karachi’s Defence Housing Authority (DHA).
The video shows Qureshi armed with an automatic weapon, firing at law enforcement officers while speaking on the phone. During the exchange, a deputy superintendent of police (DSP), Ahsan Zulfiqar, is seen getting shot and wounded. The footage also shows a girl present with Armaghan at the time of the raid, while police officers can be seen cutting through a stairway gate grill to gain access.
The incident occurred in February when personnel from the Anti-Violent Crime Cell (AVCC) — a Karachi police unit tasked with handling extortion and murder cases — attempted to apprehend Armaghan. The standoff lasted several hours before he was eventually detained.
The case involves the alleged abduction and murder of Mustafa, a BBA student who went missing on January 6. His body was discovered inside a vehicle near the Hub checkpost on January 12 and later buried by the Edhi Foundation on January 16. It was subsequently exhumed for autopsy under the supervision of a judicial magistrate and a three-member medical board.
Following the incident, the investigation widened as AVCC sought assistance from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to investigate a call centre found at Armaghan’s home.
In a significant development, the FIA recently filed a new case against Armaghan, accusing him of operating a hawala-hundi network, engaging in illegal cryptocurrency transactions, and conducting online fraud. The case, registered by the FIA’s anti-money laundering circle on behalf of the state, also alleges that Armaghan and his father had set up a shell company in the United States to facilitate illicit transactions.
Moreover, investigators claim he founded an illegal call centre in 2018, which was allegedly used to run a well-organised online scam network targeting individuals in the US.
