Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney appeared to mock US President Donald Trump after experiencing a teleprompter malfunction during a housing policy news conference. His light-hearted remark drew laughter from those attending the event in Toronto.
While addressing reporters on Wednesday, Carney paused after the teleprompter stopped working. He then joked that he did not consider the technical issue a conspiracy.
The comment appeared to reference an incident involving President Trump at the United Nations General Assembly last year. During that event, Trump reportedly experienced a halted escalator and a malfunctioning teleprompter before calling for an investigation.
Carney’s Remark Draws Laughter
Carney told reporters that the teleprompter had stopped functioning. However, he added that, unlike “a certain world leader,” he did not see the incident as a conspiracy.
His comment prompted laughter from the audience. Meanwhile, neither Carney’s office nor the White House immediately responded to requests for comment.
Canada-US Relations Remain Strained
Relations between Canada and the United States have remained tense since Trump’s return to the White House. The US president has imposed broad tariffs on Canada and repeatedly suggested it should become the 51st US state.
Carney has strongly opposed those trade measures. Furthermore, he has sought to reduce Canada’s diplomatic and economic dependence on the United States.
He has also attracted international attention by arguing that the rules-based global order has weakened. Additionally, Carney criticised major powers for using economic integration as a geopolitical tool.
