Canada has warned foreign workers and international students against working without proper authorization. Authorities said violations can trigger serious immigration consequences.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) said unauthorized work may lead to removal. It could also result in a ban preventing return to Canada for up to five years.
Moreover, unauthorized work can create a permanent fraud record with IRCC. Such records could affect future immigration applications, including permanent residence requests.
IRCC Highlights Risks Of Unauthorized Work
IRCC warned that unauthorized workers face greater risks of exploitation. These risks include wage theft, unsafe conditions, abuse, threats, forced labor, and unpaid work.
The department clarified that visitor visas and electronic travel authorizations do not permit employment. Most visitors also cannot apply for work permits while remaining in Canada.
Foreign workers must follow the conditions listed on their work permits. They should apply for extensions at least 30 days before their permits expire.
Workers who apply before expiry may remain under maintained status while authorities process applications. However, they must follow all applicable conditions during this period.
Students Also Face Strict Employment Rules
IRCC also warned foreign nationals about employment and immigration scams. Fraudsters may demand money for jobs, work permits, permanent residence, or social media services.
Meanwhile, Canadian labor laws protect temporary foreign workers. Employers must pay workers and provide safe workplaces. They also cannot confiscate passports or work permits.
International students must follow employment conditions on their study permits. They must also respect applicable limits on off-campus working hours.
Students who exceed permitted hours could lose their status. They may also face refused applications for future study or work permits.
Graduates generally need work permits to continue working in Canada. However, eligible post-graduation work permit applicants may work full-time while awaiting decisions.
They must meet the required conditions to use this provision. IRCC urged foreign nationals to understand their immigration conditions before accepting employment.
