Canada has promised to further support Ukraine to improve its air defence and energy infrastructure.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated this before meeting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney today.
Ukraine faces intensified Russian attacks and shortages of key air defence systems.
Canada has remained one of Ukraine’s strongest supporters since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022. It has committed more than $18.5 billion in total aid.
The assistance includes $6.1 billion in military support. Meanwhile, Ukraine is facing a critical shortage of US-made Patriot interceptors, which can counter Russian ballistic missiles.
“This is a very important package of air defence. This is crucial,” Zelenskyy told reporters. However, he did not provide details about the package.
Support for Ukraine’s energy sector also remains a major concern as Russian attacks continue to target critical infrastructure ahead of winter.
More Support for Ukraine
Carney said Canada would provide additional assistance to help Ukraine defend itself against Russian attacks.
He also pledged support for Ukraine’s efforts to join NATO and the European Union, while stressing Canada’s commitment to Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
“We will provide more support,” Carney told reporters. He also said Canada would continue supporting Ukraine’s energy systems and broader reconstruction efforts.
Furthermore, Carney said Canada would help rebuild Ukraine once peace returns. He noted that Ukrainians had contributed significantly to building Canada.
Zelenskyy previously said air defence and preparations for winter would remain the central priorities during his visit to Canada.
