Stephen Eustaquioโs late strike seals historic knockout victory for co-hosts
Canada secured a historic place in the FIFA World Cup last 16 after defeating South Africa 1-0 with a dramatic stoppage-time winner in the first match of the knockout stage.
Stephen Eustaquio scored the decisive goal deep into added time, sending the co-hosts into the next round for the first time in the nation’s World Cup history. The victory also ended South Africaโs impressive tournament campaign after the African side reached the knockout phase for the first time.
Despite co-hosting the tournament, Canada played the match in Los Angeles after finishing outside the top spot in their group. They will now face either the Netherlands or Morocco in Houston on July 4 for a place in the quarter-finals.
Canada dominate but struggle to break through
Canada controlled much of the match from the opening whistle, creating several scoring opportunities against South Africaโs disciplined defensive setup. However, the visitors remained dangerous on counterattacks and frustrated the Canadian forwards throughout regulation time.
Just after the hour mark, substitute Niko Sigur produced a precise through ball for Tani Oluwaseyi, whose effort was denied by the South African goalkeeper. Defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi then cleared Jonathan Davidโs follow-up attempt off the line to preserve the deadlock.
In the 75th minute, Canadian star Alphonso Davies entered the match to a loud ovation and immediately injected pace and creativity into the attack.
Late winner sparks celebrations
Canada finally found the breakthrough in the second minute of stoppage time. Jacob Shaffelburg surged down the right flank before delivering a cross that South Africa initially cleared.
The loose ball fell to Stephen Eustaquio, who controlled it with his chest before firing a powerful first-time strike into the bottom-left corner from outside the penalty area.
The dramatic goal sparked jubilant celebrations as Canada’s players and coaching staff rushed onto the pitch, marking a landmark victory and securing the country’s first-ever place in the World Cup last 16.
