Government says digital system will improve access while maintaining traditional application options
VANCOUVER: The Canadian government has expanded its online passport renewal service to all eligible adult citizens living in Canada, allowing more people to complete the renewal process digitally without visiting a passport office.
The announcement was made in Vancouver on July 28 by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Minister Lena Metlege Diab, who said the expanded service is intended to make passport renewals more accessible and convenient.
Under the new system, eligible Canadians can complete the entire renewal process online by submitting their application, passport photograph and payment electronically. Applicants will no longer need to mail documents or visit a Service Canada Centre unless they choose to do so or require in-person assistance.
The government said the expanded digital service is expected to simplify passport renewals while reducing the need for physical appointments.
Expanded access targets greater convenience
Previously, the online renewal programme was available only to a limited number of applicants. With that restriction now removed, all eligible adult citizens residing in Canada can use the service.
Officials said the change would particularly benefit residents of rural and remote communities, as well as individuals with mobility challenges, by improving access to passport services regardless of location.
Despite the expansion, Canadians will still be able to renew their passports through traditional mail-in applications or by visiting Service Canada Centres.
Modernisation efforts continue
The broader rollout forms part of the federal government’s ongoing initiative to modernise passport services through secure and user-friendly digital platforms.
It follows several recent improvements, including the introduction of an online passport application status tracker and expanded access to 10-business-day passport processing at selected Service Canada Centres.
The government also reaffirmed its passport service guarantee, under which eligible passport applications must be processed within 30 business days. If that service standard is not met, applicants will receive their passport free of charge.
Officials said the latest changes are designed to improve efficiency, enhance customer experience and provide Canadians with faster, more flexible access to essential travel documentation while maintaining existing service options.
