BYD’s high-performance electric hypercar, the Yangwang U9 Xtreme, has suffered extensive damage following a high-speed crash during testing in China. The incident has drawn attention because the vehicle previously reached nearly 500 km/h.
Videos and images of the crash emerged on November 2, showing the hypercar leaving its intended line on a closed track before striking a barrier. The collision reportedly caused severe damage, including the complete separation of the rear axle.
Despite the impact, the driver reportedly escaped without serious injuries and exited the vehicle without assistance. Meanwhile, the passenger compartment remained comparatively intact, and no battery fire was reported.
Was BYD Preparing for Another Speed Record?
The precise purpose of the test session remains unconfirmed. However, reports suggest the run may have involved preparations for a possible attempt to surpass 500 km/h.
Authorities and the automaker have not disclosed the vehicle’s speed at the moment of impact. Therefore, claims that the crash occurred during an actual world-record attempt remain unverified.
BYD had already announced plans to pursue another top-speed milestone in November 2026. Executive Vice President Stella Li said the company wanted the U9 Xtreme to exceed 500 km/h, with Dubai identified as the intended location.
However, by late October, BYD had not publicly confirmed the exact venue, required permissions or final date. It also remains unclear whether the crash will affect those plans.
U9 Xtreme Previously Reached 496.22 km/h
The Yangwang U9 Xtreme previously achieved a top speed of 496.22 km/h, equivalent to 308.3 mph, at Germany’s Automotive Testing Papenburg facility.
That performance placed the electric hypercar among the fastest cars in global top-speed testing. Subsequently, BYD set its sights on crossing the symbolic 500 km/h threshold.
The company’s testing team reportedly believed the vehicle retained additional performance potential following its record-setting run. Nevertheless, its next attempt now faces uncertainty after the crash.
Nearly 3,000 Horsepower Powers the Electric Hypercar
The U9 Xtreme represents the performance flagship of BYD’s premium Yangwang lineup. Its four electric motors generate a combined 2,220 kW, equivalent to approximately 2,977 horsepower.
Furthermore, the hypercar features a 1,200-volt electrical architecture designed for its high-performance capabilities. It also incorporates specially developed high-speed tyres, carbon-ceramic brakes and an aerodynamic package.
These components support the vehicle’s extreme-speed ambitions, where stability and control become particularly demanding.
BYD reportedly plans to produce only 30 units of the U9 Xtreme, with an estimated valuation of around $3 million.
For now, the crash leaves questions about the vehicle’s repair, the incident’s cause and BYD’s next speed-record plans. The automaker has not publicly confirmed a revised schedule or explained what caused the accident.
