China’s electric vehicle giant BYD has delivered a remarkable sales performance, setting a new monthly record in October 2026. The company sold 305,743 battery-electric passenger vehicles during the month, exceeding the entire US electric vehicle market’s third-quarter sales.
BYD’s October deliveries surpassed America’s total EV sales between July and September by approximately 43,000 vehicles. This comparison highlights the growing scale of China’s electric vehicle industry and BYD’s expanding position in the global market.
Moreover, the company’s battery-electric sales increased 37.4 per cent compared with October 2025. They also rose 11.9 per cent from September, marking the third consecutive monthly record.
BYD’s October EV Sales Surpass US Quarterly Figures
BYD’s latest performance highlights the company’s growing influence in the electric vehicle industry. Its 305,743 battery-electric passenger vehicle sales in October exceeded the estimated 262,649 EV sales across all brands in the United States during Q3 2026.
The difference reached approximately 43,000 vehicles, representing around 16 per cent more sales than the US quarterly total.
However, these figures require an important distinction. BYD’s October figure covers one manufacturer’s global battery-electric passenger vehicle sales. Meanwhile, the US figure includes all brands across an entire three-month period.
Therefore, the comparison illustrates the difference in sales scale rather than a direct market-to-market competition. Nevertheless, BYD’s ability to achieve such a high monthly volume highlights its growing manufacturing and sales strength.
Battery-Electric Vehicles Take a Larger Share of BYD Sales
BYD’s overall performance also reveals an important shift in its vehicle sales mix. The company recorded 490,168 new-energy vehicle (NEV) sales in October. This category includes battery-electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and commercial vehicles.
BEVs accounted for 63.3 per cent of BYD’s passenger vehicle sales. This represented a considerable increase from 50.9 per cent in October 2025.
Meanwhile, plug-in hybrid passenger vehicle sales moved in the opposite direction. BYD sold 177,382 plug-in hybrids during October, representing a 17.2 per cent annual decline.
The figures suggest that fully electric models are contributing a growing share of BYD’s passenger vehicle sales. However, the available data does not establish the exact reasons behind this change.
Nevertheless, the contrast between rising BEV sales and declining plug-in hybrid volumes highlights the changing composition of BYD’s business.
BYD’s International Expansion Adds to Its Growth
BYD’s record sales are not limited to its domestic market. The Chinese automaker is also expanding its international presence through growing exports.
The company exported 170,194 vehicles in October, representing a significant increase compared with the same month last year. Its shipments reached several international markets, including Europe, Southeast Asia and Central and South America.
This expansion has become increasingly important for BYD’s overall business. Strong overseas demand is helping the company maintain sales growth despite challenging conditions in China.
According to reported figures, BYD’s October exports increased 102.8 per cent year over year. However, they declined 5.8 per cent compared with September.
The export performance demonstrates how international markets are contributing to the company’s growing sales volumes. Furthermore, its expanding presence exposes BYD to a wider customer base beyond China.
Why US EV Sales Fell in the Third Quarter
Although BYD achieved record monthly sales, the American electric vehicle market experienced a difficult annual comparison.
The United States recorded an estimated 262,649 EV sales during the third quarter of 2026. This represented a 39.5 per cent decline compared with the same period last year.
However, the quarterly results were not entirely negative. US EV sales increased 6.1 per cent from the second quarter. They also reached their highest quarterly volume in a year.
The decline largely reflects an unusually strong comparison with Q3 2025. During that period, buyers rushed to purchase electric vehicles before federal purchase incentives expired.
Consequently, the earlier rush created an exceptionally high sales baseline. This made the annual decline in 2026 appear particularly steep.
Electric vehicles accounted for approximately 6.4 per cent of all new vehicle sales in the United States during Q3. This was higher than the 5.8 per cent share recorded in the previous quarter.
Therefore, the American market continues to attract EV buyers despite changes in government incentives. However, the latest figures highlight the challenges facing manufacturers following the end of federal purchase support.
BYD’s Sales Milestone Highlights the Growing Global EV Gap
BYD’s October performance highlights the growing difference in electric vehicle sales volumes between China and the United States.
One Chinese manufacturer sold more battery-electric passenger vehicles in October than all American brands combined during the entire third quarter. Although the comparison involves different reporting periods and market coverage, the difference remains striking.
Moreover, BYD’s record sales and expanding exports demonstrate its growing international reach. Its electric vehicle business continues to gain momentum, even as plug-in hybrid sales decline.
Meanwhile, the US market is adjusting to changing incentives and consumer purchasing conditions. Its third-quarter results nevertheless showed improvement over the previous quarter.
The latest figures do not mean BYD has overtaken the entire American automotive industry. However, they underline the scale of China’s electric vehicle manufacturing and sales capacity.
As international competition intensifies, BYD’s ability to maintain record deliveries and expand overseas will remain an important development in the global EV industry.
