Authorities introduce heightened precautions after reports suggest Tehran assessed US-linked military targets across southeastern Europe
SOFIA: Bulgaria has strengthened security at Bezmer Air Base following reports that Iranian forces assessed potential military targets in southeastern Europe amid heightened tensions between Tehran and Washington.
Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev said on Wednesday that Bulgarian authorities had implemented โall possible measuresโ at the military installation in coordination with the countryโs defence ministry.
According to Bulgarian news agency BTA, Demerdzhiev said officials had adopted precautions exceeding the threat level currently indicated by national security services.
He added that authorities were continuously monitoring regional developments and would maintain extensive preventive measures as circumstances evolved.
US Refuelling Aircraft Deployment Raises Strategic Importance
The heightened security follows media reports that Iranian forces examined possible strikes against US military assets in southeastern European countries, including Bulgaria, if the conflict with Washington escalates further.
Last month, Bulgariaโs parliament authorised the temporary deployment of up to eight US Air Force KC-135 aerial refuelling aircraft at Bezmer Air Base.
Additionally, authorities approved the deployment of as many as 250 US military personnel between July 24 and October 1.
The deployment aims to support US military operations in the Middle East, increasing the strategic significance of the Bulgarian facility during the continuing regional confrontation.
However, Bulgarian officials have not reported any immediate attack or confirmed that Iran has decided to target the base.
Diplomatic Efforts Remain Stalled Over Hormuz Dispute
Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions between Iran and the United States remain uncertain.
Tehran and Washington signed a memorandum of understanding in June aimed at ending the conflict that began in late February and creating conditions for a broader agreement.
Nevertheless, negotiations subsequently stalled amid disagreements over implementation and navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
Separately, Iran and Oman have continued negotiations over arrangements governing maritime traffic through the strategically important waterway.
However, those discussions have yet to produce a breakthrough, leaving regional tensions elevated as Bulgaria maintains heightened security around Bezmer Air Base.
