British-Pakistani consultant gynaecologist and robotic surgeon Dr Amer Raza has set a new record in Britain after pioneering single-port robotic gynaecological surgery and leading a programme that has completed more than 400 procedures.
A graduate of Nishtar Medical College in Multan, Dr Raza leads the Endometriosis and Robotic Surgery programme at Cromwell Hospital in London. His team has expanded single-port robotic surgery from routine benign procedures to highly complex operations for endometriosis.
Unlike conventional multi-port robotic surgery, which usually requires several abdominal incisions, single-port technology enables surgeons to use a camera and multiple robotic instruments through a single abdominal entry point.
The programme has also developed into a training and observation centre, attracting surgeons from Britain, Europe, the United States and other countries. Dr Raza said more than 100 surgeons have visited the centre to observe complex procedures and learn how single-port robotic technology can be used in challenging gynaecological cases.
Dr Raza has also received two Master Surgeon accreditations for Robotic Surgery and Advanced Endometriosis Care. The certifications were awarded by US-based Surgical Review Corporation following an external assessment of his surgical practice, patient outcomes, complications, governance and care standards.
The achievement follows another milestone recorded three years ago, when Dr Raza led a team using the da Vinci Surgical System to treat endometriosis at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London.
The team performed 12 major gynaecological operations in a single day, setting a record for the number of complex procedures completed using robotic technology.
Endometriosis can cause severe pelvic and menstrual pain and significantly affect fertility and quality of life. In complex cases, it can involve the bowel, bladder, urinary tract, nerves and diaphragm.
