Singapore authorities have charged a 26-year-old British man more than a year after he allegedly stole a denim jacket from a store at Changi Airport. Police arrested him while he was transiting through the airport on August 15.
The theft reportedly occurred on August 14, 2024, when a retail assistant noticed a blue denim jacket missing from a display mannequin. Surveillance footage allegedly showed the man removing the jacket, worth about S$350, and leaving without paying.
Police Track Down Suspected Airport Thief
Authorities identified the suspect after reviewing surveillance footage, but he had already left Singapore. Police later arrested him when he returned to the airport in transit.
The Singapore Police Force said offenders should not assume they can avoid detection by leaving the country after committing an offence. Authorities also stressed that they would deal firmly with shop theft.
Polish Woman Also Charged With Theft
Police also arrested a 50-year-old Polish woman accused of stealing two perfume bottles from retail stores at Changi Airport. Officers detained her in the transit area shortly before she was due to leave Singapore.
The woman faced two theft charges on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the British man was also charged on the same day as authorities continued proceedings against both suspects.
Singapore law allows courts to impose a prison sentence of up to seven years for theft. The cases highlight the authorities’ continued monitoring of retail areas at the busy international airport.
