Panic and grief spread in Jacobabad after a bride-to-be was shot dead during her pre-wedding Mayun ceremony on Friday, shocking local residents and relatives.
The incident occurred in the village of Gul Khan Bungali within the jurisdiction of Section C Police Station, police said, adding that the area remained tense after the incident.
Attack during Mayun ceremony
Heirs said accused Zahid Bengali wanted to marry the victim, but she refused his proposal repeatedly, according to initial statements shared with police.
Following the refusal, the accused, along with his brothers and accomplices, allegedly opened fire on her while she was sitting at the ceremony.
She sustained bullet injuries and died on the spot, creating panic in the area as guests and family members screamed and dispersed.
Police investigation underway
Police registered a case and launched an investigation while conducting raids to arrest the suspects, officials said, and teams are continuing search operations.
However, the accused managed to escape, and no arrests have been made so far despite multiple raids in surrounding areas.
Police officials said the investigation remains ongoing and they are collecting evidence from the crime scene. They urged the public to cooperate and help identify the suspects involved in the attack. Meanwhile, local residents expressed deep sorrow over the tragic killing, which has sparked concern about rising incidents of violence in the region.
Authorities reiterated that they are pursuing all leads to ensure swift arrest of the culprits and completion of legal proceedings. They also assured that justice will be served according to law without delay.
