Global oil prices have surged as renewed attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz threaten crude supplies from the Persian Gulf, raising concerns about further disruptions to international energy markets. Trump’s efforts to bring down oil prices are ending in failure as oil prices are still very high.
Brent crude climbed above $110 per barrel on October 19, reaching its highest level in five months. At the time of reporting, Brent traded at $110.68 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude stood at $98.55.
The latest increase followed reports of intensified attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. Energy analytics firm Kpler reported a sharp decline in oil exports through the strategic waterway after renewed Iranian strikes on tankers.
Reuters reported at least 18 tanker attacks over the preceding two weeks, highlighting growing risks to shipping and regional energy infrastructure. Average daily oil flows from the Persian Gulf reportedly fell to approximately 8.5 million barrels, compared with more than 20 million barrels daily earlier in the month.
Market analysts said geopolitical uncertainty was sustaining a significant risk premium in crude prices. ING commodity analysts noted that oil prices could remain elevated while supply disruptions and security concerns persist.
Meanwhile, renewed Houthi attacks on Saudi energy facilities, airports and military installations have added to regional instability, further unsettling energy traders.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical route for global oil shipments, making any prolonged disruption a major concern for importing countries. Higher crude prices could increase fuel costs, transportation expenses and inflationary pressures worldwide.
Traders are closely monitoring developments across the Middle East, as the duration and severity of shipping disruptions will influence oil prices in the coming days.
